McIntosh raising awareness after heart surgery By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Suffern NY senior Kamryn McIntosh underwent heart surgery to fix a problem called an anomalous aortic origin of her right coronary artery Feb. 23 and wants to caution other athletes to get checked out. McIntosh, who owned the national high school record in the indoor 600 meters after running 1:28.67 in 2015, went to see a cardiologist in January after experiencing intense fatigue after hard workouts and races. McIntosh said her condition is one of the leading causes of sudden death in athletes. The heart problem was allowing only 70 percent blood flow to her heart. The Clemson signee is on the mend and hopes that she can race again before her senior season is complete. Regardless, she would like to get the discussion started about this heart condition in the hopes that it saves a life. Nancy Haggerty of The Journal-News has the complete story. |
